ULSTER Rugby is "excited" with the recruitment of highly-rated Tyrone strength and conditioning coach Peter Donnelly to their academy set-up.

It is understood that Coalisland native Donnelly will remain with the Red Hands until the conclusion of their All-Ireland Championship campaign which continues with tomorrow’s Super 8 clash against Cork at Croke Park.

At the end of the season, Donnelly, a former Tyrone player and a respected and valued member of Mickey Harte’s backroom team, will make the switch to rugby union.

“Peter has a wealth of experience in GAA and we feel he will add real value to the academy set-up that we have working with the natural talent that is coming through the pathway there,” said an Ulster Rugby source.

“Everyone at Ulster Rugby is really excited to see what Peter can bring to the table.”

Donnelly began his inter-county coaching career with Cavan before he was enticed back to Tyrone where he has overseen a cutting edge programme that has produced a group of players rated as among the best conditioned in the country.

As well as the senior team, Donnelly also works with the Tyrone Academy players and the minor and U20 sides.
