DESPITE a hiatus of a few years, Seamus Quigley hasn’t lost his scoring touch. The returning Fermanagh attacker shone last month during the Erne County’s unbeaten run in the National Football League, chalking up a tally of 3-9.

For that run of scoring and his other attacking qualities during February, the sharp-shooting Roslea man has won the Quinn Building Products-UGAAWA Monthly Merit award for February, adding to a similar honour for January 2012.

Throughout last month, Quigleytotted up scores from play and, in particular, from dead ball situations as far out as the 45-metre line. His 1-8 blitz against Derry, in Fermanagh’s last match, illustrated the fact that the attacker lost nothing of his touch during his absence from the inter-county football scene.

Ironically, his brother Sean, also showing aggressive qualities in the Fermanagh attack, was the monthly merit winner for his displays during January, 2015 so the Quigleys seem to trap early in the season.

Due to county training, Seamus (29) was not able to receive the trophy in person and it was former Fermanagh goalkeeper Ronan Gallagher who stood in for his former team-mate.

Gallagher is now a member of the Erne County backroom team as goalkeeping coach.

“Unfortunately, I won’t be able to attend as we have training that night. I don’t want to miss training now that I am back in the panel as it is a strong panel. It is nice to win the award again,” said Seamus, when notified of being selected for the award.

Despite it being early season, many players are showing good form and Seamus Quigley had to fight off nominations from Armagh’s Ethan Rafferty plus Monaghan players Rory Beggan and Conor McCarthy, the latter of whom not only showed great form with his county but, also, with UCD in their Sigerson Cup success.

Quinn Building Products sales and marketing director Seamus McMahon, a Roslea Shamrocks’ club colleague of the winner, made the presentation to Gallagher on behalf of Seamus Quigley at a function in Quinn’s Corner.

The winner gets an engraved Belleek Living vase, training gear from O’Neill’s International Sports and specially designed cuff links from Carlingford Design House.

A special second presentation was made as UGAAWA chairman John Martin handed over a cheque for €780, the proceeds of a collection at the UGAAWA Dinner last month, to Gaelic Voices for Change representatives Gemma Begley and Gerard McNally.

Chairman Martin thanked the patrons who contributed to the collection for “such a worthy cause”.
