Ahead at half-time .. and still in front well into the second half ...  Antrim almost pulled off a sensational victory over All-Ireland hurling champions Galway in this Allianz Hurling League Division One B league opener at Pearse Park in Salthill.

It wasn't to be in the end with Galway, three behind with 14 minutes left on the clock, hit seven of the last eight scores to deny the Saffrons 1-19 to 1-16.

Still, Antrim can take huge positives from their performance in a game billed as mission impossible for the travelling Saffrons.

Antrim’s management team had handed out five debuts for the daunting trip to the west – David Kearney (Cushendall), Joe Maskey (St Enda’s), Gerard Walsh (‘Rossa), Maol Connolly and Donal McKinley (both Loughgiel).

Despite facing the League, Leinster and All-Ireland champions, Antrim star Neil McManus was upbeat and said he liked the attitude of the new players coming through at senior level.

“I don’t think our players will be afraid of it,” he told Irish News sports reporter Brendan Crossan prior to the game against the Tribesmen.

How right he was… and he didn’t let the size of the task affect him either, hitting 10 points for the Saffrons today.

Elsewhere today, on day one of the Allianz Football League, there were wins for four Ulster sides, Armagh, Antrim, Fermanagh and Down.

But all the Division One sides from Ulster, namely Tyrone, Monaghan and Donegal, lost out as did Derry in Division Three.

Monaghan have tended to win their recent league openers, Mayo to lose theirs, but Monaghan boss Malachy O’Rourke was especially unhappy to finish yesterday's tense tussle empty-handed.

Yesterday, Cavan battled back from seven points down to draw their Division Two Football League clash against Clare at Cusack Park in Ennis.

Meanwhile on the club front, The Moy struck a devastating late blow to stun Kerry champions An Ghaeltacht at Semple Stadium and claim a place in next weekend’s All-Ireland Club IFC decider.

A trip to Croke Park looked beyond the Tyrone champions when they trailed by double scores going into stoppage time.

But goal king Harry Loughran popped up with his eighth strike of the campaign to turn a crazy game on its head.
