Down GAA eye promotion tilt after win in Derry while Slaughtneil celebrate All-Ireland camogie success

DOWN followed up last weekend’s Allianz Football League win over Meath with a comfortable victory against Derry in Celtic Park today.

The Mourne men blasted out of the traps in Derry city, racing into a 1-9 to no-score lead after 25 minutes.

The Oak Leafers battled hard to regain parity but, when Ryan Johnston pointed for Down to leave nine in it with 15 minutes remaining, the points were all but secure for the visitors.

The result leaves Down eyeing up an unlikely promotion tilt and Derry in the relegation zone.

Elsewhere the Slaughtneil camogie squad were celebrating after lifting the All-Ireland Senior crown with a 1-10  to 0-11 win over Sarsfields (Galway)

Next up for the county Derry club sees their footballers contest the All-Ireland SCFC final on March 17 at Croke Park.

Yesterday the Slaughtneil girls came out tops at Croke, a Mary Kelly goal helping them to a great team victory.

But there was agony for Eglish in the All-Ireland Intermediate camogie final, losing out by one point to Myshall GAC.

Also in Allianz League Division Two action today, Fermanagh suffered a goal blitz at the hands of Kildare in Newbridge. Tommy Moolick netted twice in the first-half for the Lilywhites and further goals from Chris Healy and Daniel Flynn ensured a 12-point winning margin. Kildare are now top of the second division, while Fermanagh sit in last place.

In Division Three, Armagh mauled Offaly to underline their hopes of promotion. Niall Rowland, Stefan Campbell, Niall Grimley, Andrew Murnin, Rory Grugan and Anto Duffy all hit the back of the net for the Orchard county as they won by a massive 30-point margin. Antrim, on the other hand, were left contemplating the possibility of an immediate return to the bottom tier after a narrow two-point loss to Louth.

In the top flight, Kerry’s six-point win over Roscommon in Dr Hyde Park left the Connacht men still pointless after four games.

In the National Hurling League, Antrim secured a narrow win over Kildare to keep them in the hunt for promotion to Division 1B.

Tyrone's Mattie Donnelly comes under pressure from Monaghan's Drew and Ryan Wylie during the Allianz Football League Division 1 clash at Omagh

On Saturday Tyrone defeated Monaghan 0-14 to 0-10, playing with two extra men for more than half an hour.

Monaghan had two players sent off but did come close to extending their unbeaten run, and the introduction of Red Hand legend Sean Cavanagh was vital in securing the win for the home side.
