Antrim GAA clubs boxing clever to tackle homelessness
Big-hearted GAA clubs in Antrim are making a difference to hundreds of families this Christmas by teaming up with St Vincent de Paul and homeless charity De Paul to spread seasonal cheer to the most vulnerable in society.
‘#SaffronAid’ is the brainchild of Antrim GAA PRO Sean Kelly who has mobilised Gaels throughout the county to back the Saffron shoebox appeal which will see hundreds of gifts being distributed to families in need and homeless people over the next few weeks.
“In the GAA we are justifiably proud of our sense of community and on that note we want to help those who are less fortunate,” said Kelly.
“At this time of year, most of us don’t realise how lucky we are, but for some people Christmas can be just another day trying to keep warm, get enough to eat or struggling to do the most basic of things like brushing their teeth or putting on a clean pair of socks.”
The response from clubs has been positive so far and Kelly is asking that all clubs in the county get involved in the initiative by encouraging their members to donate a shoebox containing a few items, and making their premises available as collection points for SVP and De Paul.
“It’s very simple to get involved," Kelly explained. "The next time you’re out and about, pick up a few extra items, place them in a shoebox, wrap the box and mark on it whether it is suitable for a man or woman.
“We have committed to making our clubs available to be collection points for receipt of shoeboxes. You may choose to make shoe boxes specifically for those who are homeless (De Paul) or families in need (SVP). Any gifts for children should not be wrapped. SVP and De Paul will collect all boxes from your local club.”
