St Mary's, Magherafelt in MacRory Cup action against St Patrick's, Cavan

Danske Bank MacRory Cup: St Patrick’s, Cavan v St Mary’s, Magherafelt (Wednesday, Garvaghey, 12pm)

THE only team who can stop Omagh CBS claiming a place in the semi-final of the MacCormick Cup later this month are St Mary’s, Magherafelt, who are in action at midday on Wednesday in Garvaghey against St Patrick’s, Cavan.

St Mary’s drew with Patrician, Carrickmacross in their only fixture to date over a fortnight ago and there were both positives and negatives in the performance. In the opening half, they played well and opened up a good lead through Liam Quinn and Declan Cassidy. Towards the end, however, they lost that initiative and had to battle their way back for a draw.

Omagh found Cavan very difficult to break down in the latter’s only fixture to date, but they managed to pull away enough during the second half to secure a 1-9 to 1-4 victory. Cavan were content to soak up the pressure, but Omagh still managed to contain them on the break.

If St Mary’s show the same patience as Omagh did they also can get something out of the game, but Cavan play a much tighter game at the back than they will have encountered with Carrickmacross and they will need to watch the likes of Lee and Tiernan Reilly on the counter-attack.

It might only be each team’s second game, but there will be a bit of pressure on the loser in the games ahead.
