SEAMUS McEnaney remains the early favourite for the Derry job as the deadline for nominations passes.

The former Monaghan boss is one of very few to express an interest in taking over from Brian McIver, who stepped down after the Oak Leafers were knocked out of the Championship by Galway last month.

A host of names have been linked with the role but almost all have ruled themselves out of the running.

Liam Bradley, James Horan, Gary Coleman and John McEntee were among those to publicly turn down the job after McIver’s departure, while it’s understood that 1993 All-Ireland winners like Seamus and Henry Downey, Enda Gormley and Anthony Tohill are not interested.

The Irish News understands that Tony McEntee and Peter Doherty have also both rejected the offer of nominations from Derry clubs.

Tony Scullion – whose job with Ulster Council may prohibit him from taking the job – and Kevin Madden are among the others to have been linked with the post.

Neither ruled themselves out when contacted last month.
