Who's the ref?

Pádraig Hughes (Armagh)

CONOR McManus has learned from previous experience that Hughes is one of the very few referees who isn't reluctant to brandish a black card. Back in March, Hughes was the man in the middle when Monaghan and Donegal played out a dour, defensive dog-fight in the National League. The Armagh whistler issued McManus with a black card in the 26th minute. The decision was described as "harsh" by the Donegal-based journalist who supplied the match report for The Irish News. Hughes adopts a similar approach in his native Armagh. He issued three black cards in last week's Championship clash between Clan Eireann and Madden. The Cavan and Monaghan players will not get away with the conduct which was witnessed in Ballybofey last Sunday.
