Brady may sit out Salt Lake City event

PAUL Brady flew back to the USA yesterday but his participation in the weekend's USHA Players' Championship final in Salt Lake City remains unclear.

He may give the action a bye as he has already won the Elite Eight ProStop league series.

Brady (pictured), who suffered a quad muscle injury during Saturday's O'Neills All-Ireland 40x20 doubles final at St Coman's in Roscommon, had a scan on Monday but details of the damage have not yet been revealed.

He decided to fly back to the States where he will receive treatment this week before deciding whether or not to compete in the Players' Championship final.

Brady's unbeaten run through the ProStop series has catapulted him to the top of the league, which he has now won.

The weekend's competition is a different section of the annual action in which players who are not in the top eight can pre-qualify and pick which of the leading eight they wish to challenge for a place in the championship.

Last year rank outsider Armando Ortiz from Northwalk in California came through the qualifiers and chose to play Brady.

The result was a total shock as Ortiz defeated the Cavan man 15-21, 21-12, 11-5. It was only Brady's second defeat in the US.

Mullingar's Robbie McCarthy, who had played only a couple of ProStop events, went on to win the Players' Championship.

If he does sit out the Players' Championship final, Brady may instead decide to rest up for the doubles qualifier contest in Ireland at the end of next week.

That is when the doubles team for the World Championships in August will be decided. Only one men's and one women's doubles partnership will have their expenses to Calgary paid by the Irish Handball Association.
