Morey the merrier as Clare ladies sink Derry

CHLOE Morey hit 2-9 as Clare saw off Derry in the National League Division One, Group Two clash at Owenbeg, but it was the home side who struck first with Teresa McElroy opening the scoring after some fine build-up play by Karen Kielt and Louise Duggan.

Clare responded when Vera Loughnane cut through the Derry defence before pointing and Morey opened her scoring account from a placed ball. Ailish Considine and Fiona Lafferty both added points to open Clare's lead to three before Karen Kielt hit back for Derry.

The home side continued to press forward and had several half chances, but Teresa McElroy and sub Dervla O'Kane saw their efforts smothered by Laura McMahon and Aoife Griffin.

Morey and Kielt exchanged points as the Banner girls lead 1-7 to 0-4 at the break.

Niamh O'Dea and Kate Lynch took control in the centre as Clare continued to dominate. But for some stern defending from Maria Mooney, they could have raised the green flag for the second time when Roisin McMahon found herself in behind the Derry backline.

Eimear Kelly also went close, but Derry's stand-in netminder Aoife Ni Chaiside was quickly off her line to see off the danger. Morey broke the deadlock when she burst through to handpass beyond Ni Chaiside.

Mary Kelly came on for Derry and she provided a real threat, but the Clare backs remained resolute. The Oaks continued to battle and were rewarded for their efforts when Kelly added the deftest of touches to McGoldrick's ball into the square to send the ball past Denise Lynch.

McGoldrick added a fine point from distance, but Fiona Lafferty put the game to bed when she collected the ball on the 21 before firing into the top corner to leave the score 3-13 to 1-5.

In a thrilling game at the Dub, Wexford were two-point victors over Antrim on a scoreline of 2-7 to 1-8. The Saffrons were without some of their more experienced players, but Antrim manager Paul Boyle was pleased with the character his side showed.

"It was another tight encounter that could have gone either way and we are frustrated not to have got the win," he said.

"We were missing the Loughgiel girls due to a wedding, in addition to Aileen Martin and Orla O'Hara, which was not ideal, but the team really pulled together and battled for every ball.

"Our defence was outstanding with Noeleen Cosgrove, Chloe Drain, Eimhear Costello, and Teresa Scullion all showing well. Bronagh Orchin and Shannon Graham performed well and worked tirelessly throughout the game, while up front Michaela Convery showed great leadership. The team is improving with every match."
