Magherafelt may have edge

THE first post-primary schools Ulster title of the season will be decided at Celtic Park this evening when Magherafelt NRC take on Colaiste Ailigh, Letterkenny in the Ulster Bank Ward Cup decider (7pm).

The Derry lads will be hoping to go one better than 12 months ago when they lost narrowly to Rural Academy in the final. There is plenty at stake for both sides as the winners will face the Nolan Cup champions for the right to represent Ulster in the All-Ireland post primary series. Magherafelt NRC were impressive when overcoming An Gairmscoil Chu Uladh in the semi-final, 4-14 to 2-11, and will go in as slight favourites.

This is a landmark occasion for Colaiste Ailigh as it is their first Ulster final, having recently won a Donegal title for the first time as well. It is the 15th anniversary of the Irish-speaking school and there is no doubt that they will be aiming to celebrate in style.

They enjoyed an emphatic 3-11 to 1-6 success over Ballybay Community School in the semi-final and will relish the underdogs' tag, but Magherafelt might go one better than last year.
