Higgins scotches retirement prank

MAYO fans breathed a huge sigh of relief on Saturday when defender Keith Higgins (right) appeared to announce his inter-county retirement on Twitter, only to quash the story two hours later.

The 29-year-old tweeted a statement thanking management, players and supporters with the hashtag #callingitaday, which led to some national media outlets reporting that he had retired.

He said that it had come after "much soul searching", but two hours later he sent a further tweet uncovering the apparent prank, saying that "more soul searching" had persuaded him to come out of retirement, with the hashtag #gullible.

The official Mayo GAA account also released a tweet saying: "Thankfully we can say that Keith Higgins HAS NOT retired from Inter-County Football and we're looking forward to seeing him back soon! #gaa"
