Rossa and Burt clash in Ulster championship

THE Ulster intermediate and junior club hurling championships get underway this weekend, with six games down for decision.

Antrim intermediate champions O'Donovan Rossa will begin their campaign with a clash against a Burt side that has dominated the Donegal scene over the past two decades.

Rossa will hope to emulate the achievement of Creggan Kickham's, who last year won the Ulster junior title before adding the All-Ireland title in the early part of 2014.

They claimed the Antrim title at the weekend with victory over Armoy, winning by 2-16 to 0-10 in the end having been level at half-time at 0-6 apiece. Minor star Seaghan Shannon led the way for Rossa, who must travel to Letterkenny to take on the Donegal senior champions, who ply their trade at intermediate level when it comes to Ulster.

Burt won the provincial junior title in 2011, beating none other than Creggan in the final, but after a comfortable county final win over Sean Mac Cumhaill's, they face a tough step up against Aidan Hamill's side.

In the other intermediate quarter-final, Down representatives Bredagh take on Derry's Eoghan Rua at Downpatrick.

Bredagh are in the Down intermediate final after overcoming Kilclief in the semi-final, and they will meet Ballycran's reserve side on Sunday week.

Eoghan Rua will no doubt fancy their chances though. They were left gutted last year after losing an Ulster semi-final to Creggan after extra-time, and then having to watch the victors go all the way to an All-Ireland title.

The Coleraine men played their first ever game in the Derry senior championship earlier this year and came mightily close to causing an upset against last year's finalists Ballinascreen.

Their Oak Leaf counterparts Na Magha will play in the junior championship, having also stepped up to senior level again in Derry after an absence of 13 years from the top table.

They were comfortably beaten by Swatragh in their Derry quarter-final and have been without key players such as Alan Grant, Breandan Quigley and Leigh Hawkins for almost the whole season.

Na Magha are at home to the Sean Mac Cumhaill's side that contested the Donegal senior final but finished with 13 men as they went down to Burt.

Antrim junior champions Con Magees will take on Carryduff at Loughgiel, while Cootehill (Cavan) face Monaghan's Castleblayney and Killeavy take on Strabane Shamrocks in the other quarter-finals.
