Lamh Dhearg aiming to do Fitzsimons's memory proud

LAMH Dhearg's players will have Eddie Fitzsimons on their minds when they line out for their first game since the club stalwart's funeral last Sunday.

Fitzsimons was a well-known and respected presence around the Hannahstown club and beyond and Lamh Dhearg and Antrim star Paddy Cunningham says the underdogs will try to do Eddie, brother of joint-manager Frank, proud when they take on Cargin in the last of the Antrim Senior Football Championship quarter-finals tonight.

Cargin, who had five points to spare when these sides met at the same stage in 2013, go into the game as favourites to join St Teresa's, St Gall's and Creggan in the semi-finals.

Fitzsimons was cheering on Lamh Dhearg last season and his absence tonight will be hard for the players to come to terms with.

"Eddie was a huge character in the club and a massive role model and leader," said Cunningham.

"He's a huge loss to the club and I hope we can do him proud tomorrow night. His funeral on Sunday was a testament to him - not only in Lamh Dhearg, but in the GAA. The representation from GAA clubs from Antrim, Ulster and Ireland was incredible.

"Eddie is a massive loss that everybody is going to have to deal with. Hopefully in time things will get back to normal, but he'll never be forgotten."

Lamh Dhearg were the only team to deny Cargin both points in the league when they held them to a draw in the opening game of the current campaign. However, the

Toome outfit went on to record 14 wins on-the-trot after that.

"We're looking forward to the game," said Cunningham, who is also well aware of the task that awaits him and his team-mates.

"They have county stars throughout their starting 15 so they'll go in as favourites and rightly so, so we'll really have to put in a performance.

"There's no pressure on us. If we can keep it tight first half and stay in the game we definitely have a chance of coming out on the right side."

Cargin management team Eamon McCann, Ciaran O'Neill and Martin Logan will be keen to win the championship on the 40th anniversary of their first success in the competition.

In taking out Rossa comfortably in a preliminary round game, they were without the services of influential captain Justin Crozier and he will again be an absentee, with Kevin O'Boyle and Marty Kane also in the doubtful category.

They have strong back-up too. And with the McCanns - Michael, Paul and Tomas - Tony Scullion, James Laverty, Ciaran Close, John Carron and Gerard O'Boyle all keen to put in the extra effort required, Lamh Dhearg should not prove a stumbling block.

That said, Lamh Dhearg has a decent record against Cargin. Joint-managers Frank Fitzsimons and Kevin Murray will have the Hannahstown lads on their toes and they will look for match-winning performances from Cunningham, Conor and Ryan Murray, Brendan Lynch and Chris Nolan as they bid to repeat their success of 1992.
