McIver gets U21 role

DERRY have appointed new U21 and minor football managers for next season. Ballinderry Shamrocks clubman Paul McIver will take over the reins of the county's U21 side, while Damian McErlain, of the O'Donovan Rossa club in Magherafelt, will oversee the minors.

McIver had a spell as county minor manager while McErlain has an impressive record at club level - he guided the Magherafelt minors to the Ulster minor club final in 2010.

The Derry County Board also confirmed that Brian McIver would continue as the senior manager and that Tom McLean would take over from Ger Rogan as senior hurling team manager.

McLean will also act as assistant to the U21 team, which will be managed by Sean McGuckin.

"I would like to thank Derry GAA for giving me the opportunity to manage the senior hurling team, and I look forward to the challenge with great enthusiasm," said McLean.

"I have been part of the Derry hurling set-up for the past three years in a coaching capacity, and have a lot of respect for a great group of young men and really enjoy working with them.

"I hope to freshen things up by bringing new faces to both the management team and the panel.

"Sean McGuckin will stay on as the assistant manager and I would ask for full support from all Derry clubs, players and supporters to help us to fulfil the potential in Derry hurling.

"Finally, I wish the four teams in the semi-finals of the senior championship the very best of luck and look forward to top class games of hurling."

On the appointment of McLean, Derry GAA chairman, John Keenan, said: "We are delighted to have Tom on board.

"Tom is an experienced coach and manager who brings a wealth of experience to the position. On behalf of all Derry clubs, I want to wish Tom, his management team and the players the best of luck for the season ahead."

Swatragh's Stephen O'Kane will be in charge of the county's minor hurlers.
