Canavan quits Erne hotseat

PETER Canavan brought his two-year tenure as Fermanagh manager to an end last night during a meeting with the team, six weeks after casting a shadow of doubt over his future following the Ernemen's All-Ireland SFC Qualifier defeat by Cavan at Breffni Park.

After the defeat in July, Canavan was non-committal on his short-term future with Fermanagh and the Errigal Ciaran clubman signalled his desire to take the summer holidays before making an announcement.

Canavan was originally appointed as Fermanagh manager in November 2011 on a three-year term following John O'Neill's turbulent year in

charge. Fermanagh, however, have a policy of reviewing managerial performances with their review committee on a yearly basis and it appears that Canavan has taken the county as far as he can.

"Yes, we can confirm that Peter has decided to step down as manager. Peter had a meeting with the chairman earlier this evening and then he had a meeting with the team to inform them of the announcement." said Fermanagh PRO Johnny McManus "We would just like to thank Peter and his backroom team for all they have done for the county. We wish him well."

Under the Tyrone legend, the Ernemen performed admirably in the League. Fermanagh gained promotion to Division 3 in his first season and despite narrowly missing out on a second consecutive promotion this year, they failed to make any impact in the All-Ireland or Ulster championships.

In the Ulster SFC, Fermanagh have fallen at the first hurdle in the last two years under Canavan's stewardship. In 2012, the Ernemen suffered a seven-point defeat at the hands of Down and were eliminated from this year's competition by fierce rivals Cavan. Canavan's men regrouped and defeated Westmeath in the All-Ireland first round Qualifier but were once again put to the sword by the Breffnimen in the next round.

Former Fermanagh great Peter McGinnity is likely to be among the frontrunners for the vacant position.
