Glenfin Ward off relegation

GLenFIn easily accounted for a depleted Cloughaneeley side in a one-sided championship relegation play-off in Ballybofey last night.

Their impressive full-forward Gerard Ward was outstanding as he finished with a tally of 2-5 against a Cloughaneely side who badly missed the departed Maguire brothers and the injured Shaun McGarvey.

Ward struck with deadly effect after 10 minutes when he took on Ciaran Moye on the edge of the square before rifling the ball to the net.

And he hit a truly superb goal when he scythed through the Cloughaneeley defence and cooly slipped the ball under the body of keeper Michael McGinley on the stroke of half-time. elsewhere, Stephen McDermott and Frank McGlynn were orchestrating matters in the midfield and Cloughaneeley's sole response was two converted frees from centre-forward Denis Boyle.

The winners led by 2-9 0-2 at the interval.

Five minutes into the second half, the brilliant Ward struck again when he held off two defenders before planting to the net from close range.

Cloughaneely had a consolation goal from big full-forward Paul Sweeney but there was never any doubt about the winner.
