Monthly awards for Gottsche and Healy

MARK Gottsche, outstanding in London's shock win over Sligo in the Connacht SFC, a first in the provincial Championship by London since 1974, and Laois defender Cahir Healy were honoured yesterday as the Opel-sponsored GAA/GPA Allstars Players of the Month for May in football and hurling.

They were selected by the inter-county playing body for excellent performances. Gottsche will spearhead London's bid to qualify for the Connacht final when they take on Leitrim on June 23, while Laois face Leinster champions Galway on Sunday.

GAA president Liam O'Neill said of their recognition: "I wholeheartedly congratulate both Mark and Cahir on their awards, recognition from their peers of the outstanding performances both put in during their counties' respective Championship successes last month.

"Our games are littered with special talents, some of whom do not always receive the acknowledgement their skills deserve, and Mark's contribution to London's famous success over Sligo and Cahir's central role in his county's win over Antrim have helped both teams progress."
