Glentoran 2 Warrenpoint Town 1

GLENTORAN hit the front in the Irish League title race on Saturday, thanks a comeback win over strugglers Warrenpoint.

Alan O’Sullivan had put Town in front, but their chances of grabbing an unlikely result nosedived after ’keeper Mark Byrne was sent-off for a challenge on Jonny Frazer as the substitute rushed through on goal.

Robbie McDaid equalised for the Glens, while Hrvoje Plum won it for Mick Dermott’s men with a free-kick 10 minutes from time.

Glentoran are now ahead of Cliftonville at the top of the table on goals scored, with the Reds taking on Linfield tonight.

Glenavon 2 Institute 2

INSTITUTE moved a point clear of basement club Warrenpoint with a draw at Mourneview Park, but looked set to take all three points only to surrender a two-goal lead.

Glenavon dominated the first-half but squandered a series of chances, while the visitors found the net as a result of their only attack of note through Joe McCready.

Alex Pomeroy doubled the county Derry club’s lead, only for Danny Purkis and Matthew Snoddy to strike back for Glenavon and earn Gary Hamilton’s men a point.

Saturday’s other game between Dungannon Swifts and Ballymena United was called off due to a waterlogged pitch at Stangmore Park.
