Brendan Rodgers heaps praise on Celtic after Man City draw
BRENDAN Rodgers heaped praise on his Celtic warriors as they earned themselves a precious 3-3 draw with Manchester City at Celtic Park.
Widely expected to be easily dismissed by the current English Premier League leaders, who have started their domestic campaign with such authority, Celtic sensationally took the lead in the third minute through Mossa Dembele.
And although they were pegged back by a Fernandinho goal, they went in front again through a Raheem Sterling own goal, before Sterling redeemed himself with another equaliser. After the break, Dembele put Celtic back in front with a terrific strike, before Nolita tied it up again.
"I thought the players were absolutely brilliant." insisted Rodgers.
"How they pressed the game, the energy. Every time we went forward we looked like we could score. You have to sit back and look at Manchester City and how they've started the season.
So to put on that level of performance, and in fairness, apart from the Barcelona game these players have been operating at a really high level.
"But to do it against a team of that quality, of that level - I thought it was a magnificent performance."
Rodgers admitted that he was very pleased to see his team demonstrate the level of aggression that they did throughout the contest, and that it bodes well for the rest of the season ahead.
"Fundamentally how we defend is the idea of what we've been working on, in terms of how we press the game," said Rodgers.
"I think that all my teams have always played with that intent, and then that gives you and earns you the right to play.
"So we've got players who are developing and evolving al the time, and you have to be really good tactically in your game - in how you press these, or else they can open you up.
"But I thought tonight - how they played and how they performed was top class and that will give them confidence moving forward."
