CLIFTONVILLE boss Tommy Breslin was still weighing up his future with the north Belfast club on Monday night.

Assistant manager Peter Murray revealed Breslin was considering stepping down from the post in the immediate aftermath of last Saturday’s 6-1 hammering at the hands of Ballymena United. Assigned post-match media duties at the Ballymena Showgrounds, Murray accused the Cliftonville players of “throwing the towel in”.

Breslin held crunch talks with his management team and the Cliftonville board, but no decision was taken on his future late on Monday night.

Speaking prior to Monday night’s meetings, the popular Reds manager said: “I have to look and see is there a future going forward here, and that’s where I’m at.

“I haven’t decided one way or the other as yet."

Breslin echoed Murray’s scathing assessment of the team’s display at the Showgrounds.

“We were on top in the game and then a debatable penalty decision went against us and that changed the course of the whole game," he said.

"That was quickly followed by a second penalty and a red card… I think we had six yellow cards out of seven and, probably, if I had a complaint to make of our players it was that they didn’t make a tackle in the whole match,” he added.

The Reds were reduced to 10 men on the stroke of half-time when goalkeeper Peter Burke was red-carded after conceding a penalty. However, Breslin hinted that the 6-1 hammering at Ballymena last Saturday was not the sole reason for him considering his position as Cliftonville manager.

Breslin, a high-ranking civil servant, gained promotion recently which has put greater strain on his time to do the job. Breslin reluctantly accepted the job of first team manager four-and-a-half years ago after Eddie Patterson was sacked by the club.

During his time in charge, Breslin is the most successful manager the club has ever had, guiding the Reds to two league titles and three League Cups. Cliftonville currently sit third in the Irish Premiership.
