Leading bookmakers are closing betting on Martin O’Neill taking over as the new manager of Leicester City FC, potentially leaving his Republic of Ireland job in jeopardy.

William Hill have suspended betting after a major gamble was taken on O’Neill.

The ex-Celtic FC boss started the day at 10/1. However, he had been backed all the way to 1/4 by the time the market was suspended at 11:35 on Friday, with some large four figure bets being placed at that price.

William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly said: “There are some people out there who seem convinced that O’Neill is very close to getting the job if he hasn’t accepted the role already.”

Paddy Power have also closed betting on O’Neill, although for now they have kept the rest of the market open.
