It may be a new-look Spain side but there is no reason to think Vicente Del Bosque's men are incapable of becoming the first team to win the European Championship three times in a row.

Spain's success in 2008 was skippered by Carles Puyol, with David Villa the tournament's top scorer, while in 2012 Fernando Torres claimed the Golden Boot and scored in his second successive final. Both teams were built around the metronomic passing of midfielder Xavi.

Now, Puyol has hung up his boots, while Villa and Xavi are winding down their careers in the United States and Qatar respectively, and it would take a hugely unexpected turn of events for Torres to gain his first call-up since 2014.

There were 12 players who made the squads for both tournament victories, with Andres Iniesta, Iker Casillas, Cesc Fabrega, Sergio Ramos and David Silva  involved once again this time.

But it will be a much different Spain side to the one which began the World Cup in 2014, when the reigning champions suffered an embarrassing group-stage exit.

With Xavi and Xabi Alonso no longer available, the midfield has a very different look, while Del Bosque is still trying to find a striker he can rely on.

Diego Costa failed to adapt to the team, scoring just once in his first 10 international appearances and has not made the squad, while neither Celta striker Nolito or Alvaro Morata of Juventus have yet grabbed a regular starting berth.

The midfield is not such a problem for a country blessed with talented playmakers. Sergio Busquets is the kingpin in the middle, while Barcelona team-mate Andres Iniesta still dazzles for club and country.

They are joined by a plethora of players fit to grace any international side, such as Silva, Koke, Thiago Alcantara, Fabregas and Pedro Rodriguez, while Juan Mata, Isco and Santi Cazorla miss out.

In goal, the veteran Casillas is still scrapping to keep his place ahead of David de Gea, while the defence looks solid with Ramos and Gerard Pique partnering in the middle.

Spain finished qualification with eight successive wins, scoring 17 times and not conceding a goal. But the 2-1 defeat to Slovakia in October 2014 - the side's first qualifying defeat since 2006 - shows they can still be caught cold.

La Roja started their successful 2010 World Cup with a group-stage defeat to Switzerland, and drew against Italy in their Euro 2012 opener. They are slow starters but, once up to speed, have proved almost unbeatable for a number of years.

Two years ago at the World Cup in Brazil their slow start, in a very difficult group, cost them dear and they were on one of the first flights back to Europe.

But with the new 24-team Euros meaning there could potentially be three teams qualifying from a group that also contains Czech Republic, Turkey and Croatia, a poor start may not be so damaging.

Providing they do reach the knockout stages, the rest of Europe will want to avoid them.

COACH

Vicente Del Bosque

With one World Cup, a European Championship, two Champions Leagues and two Primera Division titles, the 65-year-old has a glittering CV. That he chooses to stay on when he has won everything he can with Spain speaks measures of his character. He is looking to become the first manager to win the Euros twice.

STAR MAN

David Silva

Manchester City playmaker Silva started both the previous European Championship finals, but was left on the bench for the World Cup final in 2010. There is little chance he will sit out any games in France, with his creativity key to Spain opening up the packed defences they often come up against.
