Paddy Barnes and Jamie Conlan confirmed on Waterfront bill for June
NORTH Belfast boxer Paddy Barnes is set for a home own showdown in June.
It was announced on Wednesday night that Barnes will take to the ring on Saturday, June 17 to slug it out for the WBO European Flyweight crown.
Two-time Olympic medallist Barnes will be on the Waterfront Hall bill along with fellow Belfast man Jamie Conlan.
Barnes, 30, will fight for the belt in only his third pro bout after beating Adrian Dimas Garzon last month. His opponent for the title fight has yet to be announced in an event will be shown live on BoxNation via the BT Sport package.
Barnes eased to a six-round points victory over Argentine Adrian Dimas Garzon in Belfast last month. In his second professional bout, three-time Olympian Barnes bagged some welcome rounds, although he failed to put journeyman Garzon away despite dominating the fight. Barnes won every round on referee Hughie Russell Jr’s 60-54 scorecard as the fight went the distance.
“It was a good workout,” Barnes said following April’s bout.
“I’m happy to get the six rounds.”
In November last year, Bulgarian fighter Stefan Slavchev was disqualified for bizarrely hoisting Barnes up on his shoulder at the Titanic Centre in the Ardoyne man’s debut as a professional.
Unbeaten Conlan, who is looking for his 20th win, will defend his WBC International Silver super flyweight title as he moves towards a world title shot.
Dubliner Stephen Ormond will also fight for the WBO European lightweight title against defending champ Craig Evans.
Ticket information will be released in the coming days.
