JAMES TENNYSON and Tommy McCarthy can both look forward to advancing their respective careers early in the new year.

McCarthy’s Celtic cruiserweight title challenge to Stephen Simmons has been rubber-stamped by the British Boxing Board of Control and could happen by the end of February. Meanwhile, MHD Promotions announced on Thursday that Tennyson will take on Darren Traynor in a British featherweight title eliminator at the Europa Hotel, Belfast on Saturday, February 6.

Tennyson’s promoter Mark Dunlop won purse bids for the fight and has confirmed the 12-round contest between ‘The Assassin’ Tennyson and Aberdeen native Traynor will also be the first defence of Tennyson’s Celtic Featherweight title.

Traynor is a highly-rated former amateur star who was a Scottish senior champion, Scottish international and American Golden Gloves champion and goes into the contest with an impressive 11-0 record that includes a Masters title.

“This fight will be equal to a world title fight for both men and a classic battle will be delivered on the night,” said Dunlop.

“The contest will again be held at the Europa Hotel, with ticket and undercard details to follow. Thanks to Ralph McKay for entrusting his young boxer in my hands and our coach Tony Dunlop for dedicating himself to this young man for the past three and-a-half years.

“I never brag about my fighters as other managers do, I leave it to the ring to showcase them, but James Tennyson is a world class prospect with the heart of a lion, the engine of a Jaguar and it’s safe to say he floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee as the saying goes.”

McCarthy fights Ladislav Reznicek (2-0) at the Hilton Hotel, Blackpool on Saturday night. He moved to 7-0 last Saturday night when he convincingly out-pointed Martin Szatmari in London.
