Commonwealth Youth Games boxers training in Australia

THE Northern Ireland boxing squad have flown to Australia for a training camp ahead of next month's Youth Commonwealth Games in Samoa.

The five boxers are hoping the 13-day training camp will help them secure medals at the Pacific Island games which get under way on September 5.

Coach John Conlan said the team were "looking forward to a good camp and working with the Australian and Philippines national teams".

The squad had been training at the high-performance centre at the University of Ulster Jordanstown campus before they jetted off to Australia and one of the exercises designed to improve hand-to-eye coordination involved them jabbing a tennis ball attached by wire to a headband.

The five-man team is comprised of Stephen McKenna, James McGivern, Tiernan Bradley, Aidan Walsh and Brett McGinty while coach John Conlan is joined by Damien Kennedy.

Around 1,000 young athletes aged 14-18 are taking part in the games in nice different sports - swimming, archery, athletics, boxing, lawn bowls, rugby sevens, squash, tennis and weightlifting.
