Bantamweight Michael Conlon has advanced to the final of the European Championships at Bulgaria after a comfortable victory over Italian Francesco Maietta.

The Belfast boxer justified his favourites tag with an unanimous victory in the the three-round bout.

He is now guaranteed at least a silver medal and will take on Leeds pugilist Quis Ashfaq in a re-run of last year's Commonwealth Games final, which Conlon won.

The 23-year-old was also was a silver medallist in the 2012 London Olympics and has already qualified for next year's Games in Rio.

Meanwhile, Conlon's team-mate Dean Walsh will bring home a bronze medal having lost his light-welterweight semi-final to Russia's Vitaly Dunaytsev.

Wexford light-heavyweight Joe Ward faces off against Hrvoje Sep of Croatia at 7.30pm.
