BACK IN THE DAY

The Irish News - Tuesday March 23 2010:

A veteran of 10 League and Championship seasons, Benny Coulter never played in a Down team that had beaten Armagh until last Saturday night's win in Pairc Esler.

“It has never happened since I was playing so it was good to get a victory,” he said.

Although the 28-year-old was quick to concede: “It's still only the League and I'm sure Armagh will not be too worried about it,” he did acknowledge that it was an important result for Down.

Coulter gave Down a dream start when he bagged a goal after just one minute and 15 seconds. Down pushed on to lead 1-5 to no-score after just eight minutes.

Armagh managed to reduce the deficit to just two points, but disaster struck for the Orchard county when Finnian Moriarty was sent off in the 33rd minute.

Down took full advantage of their extra man in the second half. Damien Rafferty was used as the sweeper.

When not double-marking Steven McDonnell, he oozed composure when he carried the ball into the Armagh defence.

Down completely controlled the second half.
