The Irish News - March 9 2010: St Joseph’s claim first colleges’ title
BT Nolan Cup final: St Joseph’s, Donaghmore 4-12 Edmund Rice, Glengormley 3-9
St Joseph’s, Donaghmore won their first ever Ulster colleges’ title in Creggan with an impressive display of attacking football in the BT Nolan Cup final. St Joseph’s opened strongly and Jarlath McIlvenna grabbed an early goal but, after 17 minutes,
Edmund Rice’s top player Martin Murray pulled one back for the city side. Donaghmore, however, refused to panic and, helped by a goal from Matthew Jordan, they led 2-6 to 1-3 at half-time.
That lead stretched to eight points, before the Hightown boys rallied and, entering the third quarter, goals from Seamus Loughlin and Declan Hackett had narrowed the gap to just two points.
However, the last quarter belonged to Donaghmore and two goals from Ryan Bell clinched the first ever colleges’ title for a school whose first intake of boys was just seven years ago.
