The Irish News - March 5 2010: Beijing Olympic medallist Paddy Barnes at light-flyweight, Ulster's stand-out welter, William McLaughlin, and two emerging talents, light-heavy Tommy McCarthy and Jason Quigley at middleweight, are four with big aims and ambitions in action tonight in the All-Ireland Senior Boxing Championships in Dublin.
Barnes has not had a lot on his plate domestically this season. Yet another no-contest walkover title in Ulster, he resumes rivalry with Jimmy Moore of Limerick's St Francis' club in the 48kg final.
The show-stealer fight of the night is the light-heavyweight clash of Neilstown's world number four-rated Ken Egan and Oliver Plunkett's European number 14 ranked Ulster champion McCarthy.
A rematch of last year's final (Egan won 9-5), the classy 19-year-old from Belfast is seeking to deny the Beijing Olympic finalist and three-time EU champion an historic 10th title in a row.
McLaughlin (Illies Golden Gloves) powered through the provincial box-offs and is defending the welterweight title against another Beijing Olympian, Athy's John Joe Joyce, who has switched up from 64kg after three Irish title wins in the last four Championships.
Quigley (Finn Valley) caused something of a sensational last weekend in the semi-finals outscoring European Senior bronze medallist and Ulster champion Eamon O'Kane 10-2.
