BACK IN THE DAY

The Irish News, December 10 2009: Newry outfit Southern Regional College captured their first Ulster Bank HE Senior Football League Division Three title at the first time of asking with a 1-15 to 0-8 victory over Carlow IE at a rain-soaked Ballymun Kickham’s yesterday afternoon.

In a keenly-contested opening half, the sides were tied at 0-4 apiece at the interval, with Kilcoo’s Paul Devlin (0-2), Gerard McAnulty and Kyle McAvoy providing the scores for the eventual winners.

Baltinglass native Mark Ashton (0-2), Carlow’s Keith Jackson and Brian Collins of Moorefield kept Carlow IE in touch.

SRC may have kicked seven first-half wides, but their accuracy improved on the restart, while they also tightened up in defence, holding Carlow to just two points each in the third and fourth quarters.

McAvoy and Devlin were superb in the second-half, with Mark Downey also contributing a 65th minute injury-time goal, which ensured a 10-point victory.
