BACK IN THE DAY

October 25 2009

AIB Ulster Club Senior Hurling Championship final: St Joseph’s, Ballycran (Down) 2-11 Cuchullain’s, Dunloy (Antrim) 2-16

STAR MAN: It was fitting that the final puck of the game was from Sean Dowds, from deep in defence, back helping to close out Ballycran one last time.

Dowds probably covered more yards at Casement Park than anyone in the game.

His debut in the Ulster Championship’s showpiece event, he made his mark from frees and in play, scoring 0-5 from placed chances. He worked throughalot of possession, covered practically every blade of grass in doing so, and it was his attempt on goal that Paddy Richmond forced over the line to seal the win after 54 minutes.

That goal, coming just two minutes after Simon Wilson’s free from midfield drifted all the way to the net to revive Ballycran’s prospects for an upset and a first provincial success for 16 years, was key to Dunloy’s victory.

Dowds’s tireless work and contribution to the scoring edged the man-of-the-match plaudits from Richmond for his 2-1 and impressive claims of stop-gap full-back Cathaoir Cunning, midfielder Colum Cunning and Ballycran’s Wilson and defensive duo Sean and Michael Ennis.
