1985: Steve Cram set the mile world record at three minutes 46.32 seconds in Oslo.

1990: Graham Gooch became the first Englishman since John Edrich to score a Test triple century when he hit 333 in the first innings against India at Lord's.

1991: Australia's David Campese became the first man to score 40 tries in international rugby union. In the same match Michael Lynagh became the first man past 600 points at international level.

1992: Alan Shearer was transferred from Southampton to Blackburn for a then British record fee of £3.6million.

2008: Armagh were crowned Ulster champions after their replay victory over Fermanagh at Clones.

2010: Mo Farah won gold for Great Britain in the 10,000 metres final at the European Championships in Barcelona.

2012: The London Olympic Games officially got under way with a lavish opening ceremony at the Olympic Stadium. The four-hour extravaganza, entitled Isles of Wonder, was directed by Oscar-winner Danny Boyle and featured more than 7,000 performers plus a cameo by the Queen. It was seen by an estimated worldwide TV audience of 900 million.

2013: Sean Cavanagh proved the difference as Tyrone just edged out Meath 0-17 to 2-9 in their All-Ireland Qualifier clash at Croke Park.

2014: The Antrim minor hurlers lost heavily to Galway in the All-Ireland quarter-final with Christy McNaughton top-scoring for the Ulster side.

2015: England Women slipped to an 89-run defeat against Australia in the third and final one-day international Ashes match at Worcester.

2017: Controversy reigned at Yarmouth when it was discovered that the Charlie McBride-trained Mandarin Princess, winner of the opening two-year-old race, was in fact stablemate Millie's Kiss.

2018: Everton midfielder Davy Klaassen joined Werder Bremen.
