Gary Kelly (soccer) - former Leeds and Republic of Ireland defender, born 1974.

Ashley Young (soccer) - Manchester United and England player, born 1985.

Rafael and Fabio da Silva (soccer) - Brazilian twins and full-backs, Rafael plays for Lyon while Fabio is on Nantes' books, born 1990.

Mitch Larkin (swimming) - Australian who set a record as the first swimmer to win every backstroke event and also the most gold medals for a swimmer at a single Commonwealth Games event on the Gold Coast in 2018.

DeAndre Yedlin (soccer) - Newcastle and United States full-back, born 1993.

ON THIS DAY 

1877: The first Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championship was held. The only title being contested, the men's singles, was won by Spencer Gore who beat his fellow Briton WC Marshall 6-1 6-2 6-4.

1954: Peter Thomson won the first of his five Open golf titles, and the first of three in successive years.

1982: Sir Ian Botham scored 200 runs in 219 balls for England against India at The Oval.

2003: Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier and Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger were awarded honorary OBEs for their contribution to British football.

2006: Top seed Roger Federer won the Wimbledon men's singles title, beating second seed Rafael Nadal 6-0 7-6 (7/5) 6-7 (2/7) 6-3 on Centre Court.

2006: Italy won the World Cup, beating France 5-3 on penalties after the final finished 1-1 after extra time in Berlin as Zinedine Zidane's career ended with a red card for a headbutt on Marco Materazzi.

2008: Mark Cavendish outsprinted his rivals to the finish line in Chateauroux to win stage five of the Tour de France.

2010: Cavendish won his second successive stage of the Tour de France with victory on stage six in Gueugnon.

2011: England's cricketers beat Sri Lanka by 16 runs at Old Trafford to win the NatWest Series 3-2.

2012: Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini agreed a new five-year contract. He was sacked by the club 10 months later.

2014: Sergio Romero saved Ron Vlaar and Wesley Sneijder spot-kicks as Argentina beat Holland 4-2 on penalties to advance to the World Cup final.

2015: Former FIFA executive committee member Chuck Blazer was banned from all football-related activity for life.

2016: Serena Williams won the Wimbledon's ladies' singles title by beating Angelique Kerber 7-5 6-3 and then teamed up with sister Venus to win the doubles following a 6-3 6-4 triumph over Timea Babos and Yaroslava Shvedova.

2017: Wayne Rooney completed an emotional return to Everton from Manchester United. The 31-year-old's anticipated move back to his boyhood club, after 13 successful years at Old Trafford, was confirmed, while Chelsea announced the signing of Antonio Rudiger from Roma on a five-year deal.

2018: Wayne Pivac was announced as the successor to Warren Gatland as Wales head coach following the 2019 World Cup.
