1907: Brooklands, the world's first purpose-built motor racing track, was opened. The circuit was built as a result of a ban on racing on Britain's roads.

1907: Tom Reece completed the highest-ever billiards break of 499,135 - which he began on June 3. This was in the days of the now-outlawed 'cradle cannon' whereby a player could push the two object balls around the table all day by making a cannon each time.

1957: Althea Gibson of the United States became the first black Wimbledon tennis champion when she beat Darlene Hard to win the women's singles title.

2000: England were eliminated from the race to host the 2006 World Cup as Germany were awarded the tournament, edging out South Africa by a single vote in a meeting of the FIFA delegates in Zurich.

2002: David Nalbandian became the first player in the Open era to reach the Wimbledon men's final on his tournament debut.

2006: England captain Michael Vaughan was ruled out of the Ashes series in Australia due to a knee injury.

2008: Rafael Nadal won the Wimbledon singles title for the first time, beating Roger Federer 6-4 6-4 6-7 (5) 6-7 (8) 9-7 in a classic final on Centre Court.

2010: South African Caster Semenya was given the all-clear to return to athletics. The world 800 metres champion had been sidelined for 11 months after undergoing gender tests.

2012: Andy Murray beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3 6-4 3-6 7-5 to reach the Wimbledon men's singles final, becoming the first Briton to do so since Bunny Austin in 1938. The Scot lost in the final to Federer.

2013: Ryan Bell hit six points as Derry gained revenge on Down in the Qualifiers having lost the Ulster Championship meeting against them a few weeks earlier.

2014: Conor McManus’s 1-7 tally helped Monaghan past Armagh in the Ulster semi-final replay.

2017: Joe Root enjoyed the perfect start to life as England captain, finishing day one of the first Test against South Africa at Lord's unbeaten on 184.
