1985: A fire at Valley Parade, home of Bradford, claimed the lives of 56 people in a match against Lincoln which was supposed to be a celebration of the Bantams' Third Division championship win that season.

2003: West Ham were relegated from the Premiership after a 2-2 draw with Birmingham on the final day of the season. Bolton's 2-1 win over Middlesbrough ensured their survival.

2008: Manchester United secured the Premier League title, their 10th under Sir Alex Ferguson, with a 2-0 win at Wigan.

2009: Richard Gasquet was suspended by the International Tennis Federation after the Frenchman confirmed he had tested positive for cocaine. He was later cleared after protesting it entered his system after kissing a girl in a nightclub.

2010: West Ham sacked Gianfranco Zola, while former England boss Steve McClaren was appointed Wolfsburg coach.

2011: The funeral of golf great Seve Ballesteros was held in his home village of Pedrena in Spain.

2012: Newcastle boss Alan Pardew was named the Barclays Premier League's manager of the season.

2013: Kyla Trainor and Hazel Jordan scored the goals as Down came back to beat Armagh in the Division Three final on a 2-6 to 0-11 scoreline.

2014: A last-minute Kevin Hinphey point gave Derry the win that knocked holders Down out of the Christy Ring Cup.

2016: Sunderland claimed a 3-0 victory against Everton to secure their Premier League status and relegate both Newcastle and Norwich.

2016: Bill Beaumont was elected chairman of World Rugby, taking up office from July 1.

2018: Cardiff Blues won the European Challenge Cup after beating Gloucester 31-30 in the final in Bilbao.
