1741: George Stevenson became the first fighter to lose his life as a direct result of a prize fight. He died after a bout with Jack Broughton at Taylor's Booth, Tottenham Court Road, London.

1897: Batley beat St Helens 10-3 in front of 13,492 fans at Headingley to win the first Northern Union Cup (now the Challenge Cup).

1992: Tottenham's Gary Lineker received the Football Writers' Player of the Year award for the second time. He first won it in 1986, while at Everton.

2011: Donegal picked up their first silverware of the Jim McGuinness era as goals from Michael Murphy and Colm McFadden helped them a 2-11 to 0-16 Division Two final win over Laois.

2013: Liverpool forward Luis Suarez was given a 10-game ban by the Football Association after biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic.

2016: Tyrone collected the Division Two title at Croke Park with Ronan O’Neill’s goal helping them to a 1-17 to 0-15 win over Cavan at Croke Park.

2017: Newcastle were promoted to the Premier League after a 4-1 win against Preston.

2018: Liverpool beat Roma 5-2 in the Champions League semi-final first leg at Anfield. Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino both scored twice, with Sadio Mane getting the home side's other goal.
