1957: Golfer Seve Ballesteros was born. The Spaniard won the Open Championship three times and the Masters twice on his way to amassing 87 career titles and played an inspirational role in the Ryder Cup. He died in 2011, aged 54.

1983: Jenny Pitman became the first woman trainer to saddle a Grand National winner when 13-1 shot Corbiere, ridden by Ben De Haan, won at Aintree.

1988: Alan Shearer, then a Southampton player, became the youngest person, at 17 years and 240 days, to score a top-flight hat-trick, against Arsenal.

2001: John Aloisi, then of Coventry, scored six goals as Australia set a new record with a 22-0 defeat of Tonga in an Oceania World Cup qualifier. The Socceroos went on to set a new mark with their 31-0 win over American Samoa two days later, striker Archie Thompson chalking up 13 goals at Coffs Harbour.

2006: Phil Mickelson won the Masters for the second time in three years, beating South African Tim Clark by two strokes.

2012: Bubba Watson beat Louis Oosthuizen in a play-off to win the Masters.

2014: Owner Assem Allam's application to change the name of Hull City to Hull Tigers was rejected by the Football Association.

2017: Kerry ended Dublin’s two-year League unbeaten run with a 0-20 to 1-16 Division One final win.
