1869: Ernest Michaux of France won the first international cycle race, held at Crystal Palace.

1962: Accrington Stanley were forced to withdraw from the Football League with 13 matches left of the season due to financial problems.

1971: American-born driver Mario Andretti claimed the first of his 12 grand prix wins, driving a Ferrari to victory in South Africa.

1976: Wilfredo Benitez of Puerto Rico became the youngest world boxing champion at the age of 17 years and 176 days when he beat Antonio Cervantes to win the WBA junior-welterweight title in San Juan.

1988: UCC claimed the Sigerson Cup with a 0-8 to 0-5 win over UCG at Summerhill in county Meath.

2004: World champions England crashed to a shock 19-13 defeat to Ireland which ended their 22-game unbeaten run at Twickenham.

2006: Sunderland sacked manager Mick McCarthy, with the club bottom of the Barclays Premier League.

2008: England head coach Brian Ashton axed Danny Cipriani from his team to play Scotland for disciplinary reasons two days before the game, after the 20-year-old was photographed leaving a London nightclub at around 12.30am.

2009: David Beckham agreed a 'timeshare' agreement between LA Galaxy and AC Milan that allowed him to spend a large chunk of the following 15 months playing for the Serie A giants.

2010: Ryan Henderson’s last-gasp point earned Armagh a one-point win over Laois at O’Moore Park.

2011: The Down hurlers came close to a massive shock as they led Limerick after 58 minutes before eventually losing out 1-25 to 2-11.

2012: Former England captain Lewis Moody, who was a World Cup winner in 2003, retired from rugby at the age of 33.
