1929: Two-time Formula One world champion Graham Hill was born. The father of 1996 world champion Damon was killed in a plane crash in 1975.

1978: England, captained by Geoff Boycott, were dismissed for 64 as they suffered their first Test defeat to New Zealand.

1978: Leon Spinks beat Muhammad Ali to claim the world heavyweight boxing title, although Ali won it back later that year.

1980: England wicketkeeper Bob Taylor equalled the Test world record by dismissing seven Indian batsmen - all caught - in Mumbai.

1995: Rioting England fans forced a Dublin friendly to be abandoned after 27 minutes, with the Republic of Ireland leading 1-0 at the time.

2010: Andy Powell was dropped from Wales' RBS 6 Nations squad after being charged with drink-driving after he was arrested with a golf buggy at motorway services on the M4 following the 31-24 defeat of Scotland.

2012: Rangers appointed administrators Duff and Phelps as their financial problems mounted.

2015: League One Bradford continued their remarkable run in the FA Cup as they beat Sunderland 2-0 at Valley Parade to move into the quarter-finals. They later lost to Reading after a quarter-final replay.

2016: Liverpool reached an agreement to sign defender Joel Matip from Schalke at the end of the season.
