1911: Jim Driscoll became the first man to win the Lonsdale Belt outright when he stopped 'Spike' Robson in the 11th round of their British featherweight title fight in London.

1957: Flamboyant American golfer Payne Stewart was born. A familiar figure in his 'plus fours', Stewart won his first major at the US PGA Championship in 1989 and then secured the US Open two years later. In 1999, he claimed the US Open title again and appeared in his fourth Ryder Cup match. On October 25, 1999, Stewart was killed when the private Learjet he was travelling in crashed in South Dakota.

1999: Glenn Hoddle provoked furious condemnation from sports bodies, churches and the Government after saying in an interview he believed people born disabled were paying for sins committed in a previous life. Hoddle was later sacked as England manager.

2001: Celtic's Alan Stubbs, former Hibernian and Rotherham manager, was given the all-clear after twice fighting cancer.

2003: Just hours after confirming the departure of striker Robbie Fowler, Leeds agreed a £9million fee with Newcastle for the sale of England defender Jonathan Woodgate.

2005: Marat Safin won the Australian Open with a 1-6 6-3 6-4 6-4 triumph over Lleyton Hewitt in the final.

2008: Stuart Pearce was appointed as one of Fabio Capello's coaches for the England senior team.

2011: Andy Murray lost 6-4 6-2 6-3 in the final of the Australian Open to Novak Djokovic.

2013: Liverpool announced the signing of Brazilian forward Philippe Coutinho from Inter Milan.
