1971: Former world heavyweight boxing champion Sonny Liston was found dead in a Las Vegas apartment.

1971: Australia and England met in the first one-day cricket international in Melbourne.

2000: Pele was voted the best player of the 20th century, ahead of Johan Cruyff and Franz Beckenbauer, in a poll by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics.

2003: Canada's John Part ended the eight-year unbeaten run of Phil Taylor with victory in the PDC World Championship final at Purfleet.

2007: England lost the fifth and final Ashes Test in Sydney by 10 wickets to complete a 5-0 series win for the hosts, the first Ashes whitewash in 86 years.

2011: England batsman Paul Collingwood announced his retirement from Test cricket at the end of the fifth Ashes Test.

2014: Australia defeated England by 281 runs in the fifth and final Ashes Test in Sydney, completing a second 5-0 series whitewash for the Baggy Green in four years.

2015: Temba Bavuma became the first black African to score a Test century for South Africa after making 102 not out against England on day four of the second Test in Cape Town.

2017: Two-time Olympic canoeing silver medallist Richard Hounslow announced his retirement from the sport.

2018: Serena Williams withdrew from the Australian Open and confirmed she would not defend the title she won in 2017.
