ON THIS DAY

1926: Victoria completed the highest innings in first-class cricket when they scored 1,107 against New South Wales at Melbourne. Victoria won by an innings and 656 runs.

1934: The first women's cricket Test, between Australia and England, started in Brisbane.

2000: England rugby union captain Martin Johnson was banned for 35 days by the Rugby Football Union for violent conduct following Leicester's Tetley's Bitter Cup quarter-final with Saracens.

2006: Australia beat England by an innings and 99 runs in the fourth Ashes Test in Melbourne and went on to complete a 5-0 whitewash in the series.

2007: Roy Hodgson was named as the new Fulham manager. Hodgson went on to keep Fulham in the Premier League at the end of the 2007/08 campaign and managed them to the 2010 Europa League final.

2008: Newcastle owner Mike Ashley confirmed the club were no longer for sale after failing to find a buyer.

2015: Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech set a new Premier League record for clean sheets of 170 games in his side's 2-0 win over Bournemouth, moving ahead of David James.

2017: Swansea confirmed the appointment of Carlos Carvalhal as their new manager until the end of the season.
