1894: England and Yorkshire batsman Herbert Sutcliffe was born. He scored 4,555 runs in 54 Tests and scored more than 50,000 first-class runs between 1919 and 1945. He died aged 83 in 1978.

2001: Fifteen fans were injured after being hit by a car driven by two-time world champion Carlos Sainz at the Network Q Rally of Great Britain.

2002: Dominic McKinley’s Antrim lost the All-Ireland Intermediate Camogie final following a 3-9 to 1-10 loss to Cork.

2003: West Brom striker Lee Hughes was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He was later convicted and jailed.

2004: Harry Redknapp resigned as manager of Portsmouth after his managerial style was compromised by the appointment of Velimir Zajec as executive director.

2005: Portsmouth sacked manager Alain Perrin.

2009: Manager Paul Hart was "relieved of his duties" at Portsmouth.

2013: New Zealand became the first ever side to register a perfect season in the professional era with a last-gasp 24-22 win over Ireland in Dublin, secured after fly-half Aaron Cruden was allowed a second attempt at an overtime conversion.

2013: All-Ireland holders St Brigid’s let their title slip as they lost the Connacht final to Castlebar.

2014: Marco Mattiacci was sacked as Ferrari team principal after just seven months in the job and replaced by Maurizio Arrivabene.

2016: Steven Gerrard announced his retirement from playing professional football, but made no firm commitment to his next move.
