1894: Airdrieonians beat Dundee Wanderers 15-1 in a Scottish Second Division game to record the biggest win in British league football.

1987: New Zealand established what was then a world-record score for a rugby union international when they won 106-4 against Japan in Tokyo.

1997: Former Rangers and Liverpool boss Graeme Souness was appointed manager of Portuguese giants Benfica. He stayed at the club for less than two years.

2000: Alec Stewart was one of nine former Test captains named in a match-fixing report published by India's Central Bureau of Investigation. Former England skipper Stewart was later cleared of all allegations by the International Cricket Council's anti-corruption unit.

2004: Berti Vogts resigned as Scotland manager after a disappointing two and a half years in charge.

2006: Pakistan bowler Shoaib Akhtar was banned for two years by a doping tribunal after testing positive for nandrolone during the ICC Champions Trophy. Team-mate Mohammad Asif was banned for one year for testing positive for nandrolone. Both were later cleared on appeal.

2007: Former champion Martina Hingis revealed she tested positive for cocaine at Wimbledon earlier in the year. She denied taking the drug and announced her immediate retirement from professional tennis. In January 2008 she was handed a two-year ban. She returned as a doubles specialist in 2013 and retired again in October 2017.

2011: Former Pakistan Test cricket captain Salman Butt was found guilty at Southwark Crown Court of conspiring to fix parts of the 2010 Lord's Test against England. Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Asif was also found guilty of conspiring to accept corrupt payments. Butt was later jailed for 30 months and Asif for 12 months.

2011: The Metropolitan Police launched a formal investigation into allegations that Chelsea captain John Terry racially abused QPR defender Anton Ferdinand during a Barclays Premier League match between the sides. Terry was later cleared at Westminster Magistrates' Court.

2012: South Africa Test cricket captain Graeme Smith signed a three-year deal with Surrey.

2016: Manchester City came from behind to beat Barcelona 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium in the Champions League, with Ilkay Gundogan scoring twice.

2017: Sergio Aguero broke Manchester City's goalscoring record after netting his 178th for the club in a 4-2 Champions League win at Napoli.

2017: Dele Alli scored twice as Tottenham beat holders Real Madrid 3-1 in a Champions League group stage clash at Wembley.
