1925: Eileen Joel, daughter of millionaire racehorse owner Jim Joel, became the first female jockey to win an 'open' race when she won the four-mile Town Plate at Newmarket on Hogier. The race, which dates back to 1665, featured five women in the field of eight jockeys.

1996: The England Under-21 football team's 0-0 draw with Poland at Molineux was delayed by two hours because of a suspect package, which turned out to be a sandwich.

2005: England qualified for the 2006 World Cup finals despite captain David Beckham becoming the first player in history to be sent off twice for the national team.

Sven-Goran Eriksson's side beat Austria 1-0 and Holland beat the Czech Republic to guarantee England's place as one of the two best runners-up.

2007: Crystal Palace sacked manager Peter Taylor after collecting just 10 points from their opening 10 matches in the Championship.

2010: The Premier League announced it had given approval to New England Sports Ventures' proposed takeover of Liverpool, which was later completed.

2011: Wales beat Ireland 22-10 in their rugby union World Cup quarter-final in Wellington, while England went out after losing 19-12 to France in Auckland. France would later beat Wales in the semi-finals before losing a tight final to New Zealand.

2013: Gus Poyet was named as Sunderland head coach on a two-year contract. On the same day, Craig Bellamy announced he would retire from international football at the end of Wales' World Cup qualifying campaign.

2015: Sepp Blatter, Michel Platini and Jerome Valcke were provisionally suspended by FIFA's ethics committee for 90 days. On a busy day in football, Liverpool appointed Jurgen Klopp as their new manager, and Northern Ireland guaranteed their place at Euro 2016 by beating Greece 3-1 in their Group F qualifier at Windsor Park.

2016: Johanna Konta became the first British woman to break into the top 10 of the world rankings in 32 years after beating Madison Keys to reach the final of the China Open.
