1909: The first rugby match was played at Twickenham when resident club Harlequins faced Richmond.

1968: Robert Gibson of the St Louis Cardinals pitched a championship record 17 strikeouts against the Detroit Tigers in the World Series. The Tigers won the best-of-seven series 4-3.

1980: Muhammad Ali had his 25th and last world heavyweight title fight. He was stopped in the 10th round by Larry Holmes at Caesar's Palace, Las Vegas.

2006: Lord Stevens, leading the inquiry into allegations of corruption in English football, announced there were 39 transfers involving eight English league teams which merited further investigation.

2007: Hugh Morris was appointed managing director of the England team by the England and Wales Cricket Board.

2009: Rio de Janeiro was awarded the 2016 Olympic Games.

2010: Wigan beat St Helens 22-10 in the Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford.

2011: Former England boss Steve McClaren resigned as Nottingham Forest manager after just 10 league matches in charge.

2015: Leading FIFA sponsors Coca-Cola, Visa, Budweiser and McDonald's demanded Sepp Blatter's immediate resignation as president of the governing body.
