1930: Amateur golfer Bobby Jones completed a unique 'grand slam' when he captured the US Amateur Championship to add to the British Amateur Championship, the Open Championship and US Open.

1950: Joe Louis failed to regain the world heavyweight title, 18 months after announcing his retirement, when he lost on points to Ezzard Charles in New York.

1987: Europe's Ryder Cup team made history by inflicting the first home defeat on the United States since the tournament began in 1927. The Europeans, under captain Tony Jacklin, won 15-13 to retain the title in Ohio.

2003: Ricky Hatton made the 10th defence of his WBU light-welterweight title. Aldo Rios retired at the end of the ninth round in the Manchester fight.

2004: England A cricketer Graham Wagg pleaded guilty to using cocaine at a disciplinary hearing at Lord's. He was later banned for a year and had his Warwickshire contract terminated.

2008: Durham won their maiden County Championship title after they beat Kent and Nottinghamshire drew against Hampshire.
