1976: Derby became the first British club to score 12 goals in a European match when they beat Ireland's Finn Harps 12-0 in a UEFA Cup tie.

1984: Lester Piggott broke Frank Buckle's record of 27 Classic wins when he rode Commanche Run to victory in the St Leger.

1985: Tony Jacklin's European team inflicted defeat on the Americans in the Ryder Cup for the first time in 28 years at The Belfry.

2003: England Test batsman and wicketkeeper Alec Stewart retired from first-class cricket.

2005: Frank Hadden was confirmed as Scotland's new coach by the Scottish Rugby Football Union after a spell as caretaker.

2011: Lancashire won the County Championship Division One title after they beat Somerset by eight wickets, while Warwickshire drew with Hampshire.

2012: Clare claimed the All-Ireland U21 Hurling Championship title with a 2-17 to 2-11 win over Kilkenny.
