1991: Big-hitting John Daly came from nowhere to win the US PGA title at the Crooked Stick course in Indiana, having been a tour rookie and ninth reserve for the tournament.

1994: Goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar left Liverpool after 13 years and 627 appearances to sign for Southampton.

2001: Two Johnny Crowley foals helped Kerry to an All-Ireland quarterfinal win over Kerry. 

2005: Shane Warne took his 600th Test wicket when he removed Marcus Trescothick in the third Ashes Test at Old Trafford.

2006: Former captain David Beckham was left out of new England coach Steve McClaren's first squad for a friendly against Greece.

2007: Derry put up a brave effort in the All-Ireland quarter-final but lost out 0-18 to 0-15 to Dublin. 

2008: Rebecca Adlington won the Olympic 400 metres freestyle in Beijing to become Britain's first female swimming gold medallist for 48 years.

2009: Michael Schumacher called off his Formula One comeback with Ferrari because of a neck injury. Schumacher later resumed racing with the Mercedes team.

2011: Tottenham's Premier League clash at home to Everton on the opening day of the new Premier League season was called off after rioting in the area.

2012: Mo Farah won Olympic 5,000 metres gold in London. Boxer Luke Campbell and canoeist Ed McKeever were Great Britain's other gold medallists on the day.

2013: Ryan O’Dwyer’s sending off proved crucial as Cork defeated Dublin 1-24 to 1-19 to reach the All-Ireland SHC final. 

2015: Stoke completed a club-record £12million deal for midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri.

2016: Great Britain's Jason Kenny, Phil Hindes and Callum Skinner won gold in the cycling men's team sprint at the Rio Olympics.
